Floreana Island
Also known as the “Mystery Island,” Floreana is a place with a very interesting human history. Today we started our activities early with a visit to Post Office Bay, which is one of the oldest mailing systems in South America. Afterwards we enjoyed a panga ride along a sea lion nursery on two beautiful islets. On these picturesque rocky shores there is a small community of prickly pear cactus, Opuntia megasperma, and it is also are a great habitat for sea lions.
Back on board the ship, we had a delicious breakfast and after the meal sailed to Champion Islet for water activities. We took glass bottom boat outings and snorkeled in crystal-clear water. It was a superb snorkeling experience and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring the Galapagos marine ecosystem. We swam among huge schools of hundreds of tropical fish. One of the most beautiful and colorful of all the fish found in this Archipelago (see today’s picture) is the Moorish idol. To our delight, several sea lions were waiting to play with us. Sometimes it seems that they are teasing us, and that we are just big clumsy toys to them. We all, marine mammals and humans, had a great time!
