Santiago Island
As we snorkeled off a lovely golden beach this morning, a friendly and curious penguin swam right up to us. This afternoon, as I sat in the middle of yet another beautiful beach, this one made of fine black sand, I was thinking many things….
First of all, I thought how lucky I am to be in a place like this and how fortunate I am to share these wonders with some of the best people I have encountered in my professional life. Second, I have to admit that despite the fact that this is the last day of the voyage, I am enjoying it as if it was my first day ever visiting the Galapagos. The tranquility of this beach is amazing! The black lava flows have, over millennium, eroded into this soft sandy beach. Some of our youngest guests decided this afternoon to lay back, hang out and just enjoy the beach. Sea lions were everywhere as if they were part of an official farewell committee for our guests.
Both the afternoon snorkeling and the walk were fantastic. There were countless lazy sea turtles feeding in the shallows, and we were able to swim within feet of them. The walk was a fantastic review of much that we have seen and experienced, and with a late afternoon low tide, the shoreline was extremely picturesque and interesting. As we ended our walk, the sunset revealed colors that we hadn’t seen before on this trip. We headed back to the ship for a very happy “happy hour” of reminiscing in the bar and a delicious farewell dinner. It has been a terrific trip and we are both sad and glad to see it ending. We are glad for the very special memories we will take back home with us.
