Genovesa Island

We spent all day on Genovesa Island, also known as Bird Island. In fact as soon as we arrived here, thousands of birds where flying around us.

It was amazing to see the number of birds all over the place and have the opportunity to walk among them. We got very close to the red-footed boobies' nesting area, and saw them perched on the mangrove’s branches. It is very interesting to observe a bird with webfeet sitting on the bushes, or nesting on the vegetation. Of the three kinds of boobies that we find on the islands, the red-footed booby is the only one that is able to nest on trees, because it has prehensile feet.

During the walk we also saw big populations of great frigate birds. Some of the frigates were incubating and others were taking care of their little fluffy chicks. We enjoyed exploring this marvelous ecosystem filled with drama and beauty. After the walk there were water and snorkeling activities.

During the afternoon we had another very pleasant walk on the other side of the same island, up a set of natural stairs which are the only access to the high cliffs surrounding Darwin Bay. As we walked along the island we saw Nazca boobies, adult and juvenile red-footed boobies, frigate birds, mockingbirds, and we even found three short-eared owls. It was a great show of the biodiversity of these islands.
