Genovesa Island
One of the most striking characteristics of the fascinating fauna of the Galapagos Islands is not only its abundance but also its approachability. Unforgettable encounters are, incredible though it seems, an everyday experience. The exquisiteness of the animal species combined with their ecological naїveté provokes in our visitors perennial memories. In many cases these experiences are so strong that can become stories to be told for a lifetime. This week we have onboard the last of a long series of family trips for this season. Children, their parents and relatives have been sharing these wonderful moments with us. For me as a naturalist it is very rewarding to observe how people can admire the wonders of nature in its most pristine stage.
The picture for today shows you a very hilarious situation that happened during our walk. A young frigate opened its wings wide adopting a peculiar pose. Funny comments arose: Was this bird meditating? Was it practicing yoga? Tai chi? Was it bored? We could not avoid laughing hard while watching the frigate. After all the laughter I explained the reason why it is believed frigates open their wings wide like that: the young frigate was drying its wings after a misty rain that fell for some minutes. Experiences like the “meditating frigate” are just samples of the many great moments we can see and observe here in this magical paradise.
