Floreana Island

We started a fantastic day very early visiting the so-called Post Office Barrel, which remains one of the oldest functioning mailing systems of South America. Cards were read, cards were left, and cards were taken for delivery on arrival home.

Later on our Captain Juan Rueda repositioned the ship towards Champion, an islet off Floreana. There we focused on water activities of various kinds, some of which required getting wet (snorkeling and Scuba diving), but another style of exploration allowed us a dry view of the marine world by riding in a covered glass- bottomed boat.

I am sure the highlight of the morning for many of us were the unexpected large pod of bottle-nosed dolphins that kept our attention for a while, and we even had a chance to swim with them (we were dressed and ready for snorkeling, so why not?). It was a fantastic experience. Right after we returned to the coastline of Champion, we encountered some sea lions. The juveniles we find at this site have a ball playing with us in the water. I never know who has more fun, they or us. And we also enjoyed the large and diverse number of tropical fish that we saw. Frankly, Champion was at it’s best.

The afternoon was spectacular in a total different fashion. The brilliantly salmon pink flamingoes danced solitary circles to stir up food from the murky bottom. And late afternoon we came back home dreaming of more things to come.
