Santa Cruz Island
Is this a faked photo? Or is it a postcard? Can visitors in the Galapagos encounter such a beautiful and perfect setting? Is it possible to find it all together: a giant tortoise with a Vermillion flycatcher on it and a great green background? It doesn’t seem real, but this actually happened today, and could happen any time when we visit the highlands of Santa Cruz Island.
This is only a sample of what we saw and of what we experienced. In the morning we visited the Charles Darwin Research Station, and found famous tortoise Lonesome George quite active in his corral. He was chasing one of his girlfriends, but the lady tortoise ran much faster than George. Therefore they are both still lonely, without any prospect of offspring yet.
Our guests got the chance to walk through a lovely town, Puerto Ayora and then to take a bus ride to the highlands for lunch. But some adventurous people preferred to do some bike riding over the rolling hills of the Santa Cruz highlands to get to the restaurant. Some others jogged, some played volleyball, and some swam. There were opportunities for everyone, even the chance of enjoying a jacuzzi with a cold beer in hand.
The afternoon brought us more tortoises, and birds, and wonderful geology. In the evening, after another great meal, we danced to the rhythm of superb Ecuadorian music.
