Santa Cruz Island
We arrived today to Puerto Ayora, my home town. I have seen so many changes in the last decade, but the changes have been mostly for good.
We visited this morning the Charles Darwin Station, where we saw some baby land tortoises, only one year old, and also the giants about two hundred years old.
In the Center, we have different projects to restore the population of endemic land iguanas and land tortoises. After this visit, we had the great opportunity to know the town, to know how people live in Galápagos. Believe it or not there is a population of about 28 thousand people living on the islands. I remember that in my childhood I played with marine iguanas and sea lions, taking baths in the tidal pools with the sally-light foot crabs; it was amazing. Nowadays I am so proud to be from Galápagos, and the best part is that I can share the experiences I had in the past with all our guests that are coming to this enchanted archipelago to observe these amazing creatures.
Galápagos is not only a number of islands in the Pacific. This is a place where the past didn’t change, and the hope to save this unique ecosystem persists; it is a place where you can encounter your self and learn to live in constant equilibrium with nature.
