This spectacular island was as its best today. Frigate birds are at the peak of their breeding season. Today, there were dozens of male great frigate birds showing off all over. They were doing their best to attract the attention of the passing by females. The male frigates’ main device is their bright red gular sac. This rather comical “balloon” has made them famous. These sacs when fully inflated add an incredible and magical touch of color to the place. The stiff competition among pretending males provokes the use of additional peculiar methods of persuasion in addition to the sacs. The male frigate birds turn their heads upward and move them from side to side. At the same time the birds spread their wings and shake them vigorously and call loudly. It is very amusing to observe the whole event. Can you imagine how busy and noisy the colony is at this time of the year? In simple words, we were walking among hundreds of birds. We were immersed in a marvelous natural symphony of sounds and calls. On Genovesa Island you certainly can feel distant from the rest of the world. You can feel immersed in the ultimate wildest dream you have ever had.
