Floreana Island
Today in the morning around Champion Islet located off shore of Floreana Island, conditions for snorkeling were almost perfect. The sun was shining, and the water was crystal clear and warm (79 degrees Fahrenheit). These extraordinary conditions together with the abundance of marine life made this snorkeling experience one of the best we have had this year. The intimate contact with the underwater world provoked in our visitors not only great enjoyment but a sincere appreciation for the efforts to protect the oceans all over the world.
Galápagos sea lions were the most prominent stars among the many animal species we had the pleasure to observe. It is not easy to describe how fascinating the experience of swimming with sea lions can be. Swift acrobatic movements, twisting contortions, and fast approaches just made us laugh hard with a strange combination of amazement and happiness. In addition to these beloved marine mammals, we also spotted a Galápagos penguin, sea turtles and a big array of spectacular colorful fish species and invertebrates. The Pacific sea turtles deserve a special comment. It is nothing less than extraordinary to have such intimate contact with these highly endangered marine reptiles.
Reluctantly, after having experienced eternal minutes of fascination and joy, we came back onboard. We left behind Champion Islet, but the memories of this highly successful snorkeling outing will remain in our hearts forever.
