Floreana & Isabela Islands
Today we had the great opportunity to visit two different islands, and they are each so different from each other. Floreana Island was one of the first islands colonized by humans and turned out to be one of the most mysterious islands of the archipelago. Even today, not many people like to live on this island because of the history of the strange manner in which people have disappeared.
In the afternoon, we sailed to Isabela Island, one of the youngest islands in the archipelago. We arrived at the base of a giant volcano called the “black hill.” This volcano erupted only five months ago, and the town was very lucky because the volcano erupted volcanic magma on the far side so the town wasn’t affected at all.
I consider this place to be one of the most beautiful towns in Galápagos, first for the great panorama, and second for the peaceful life style of this place. We took a hike to the National Park building to see a program that they started some years ago to protect the giant tortoises. We had the opportunity to see some baby tortoises of only few months old and some of the biggest of about a couple hundred of years old. In Galápagos we don’t have only one type of tortoise, we have eleven types and every one is totally different from the other. They evolved in different directions and have changed depending on the island that they established themselves on, once arrived from the mainland millions of year ago.
Our guests really enjoyed this visit as well as walking along the beach and enjoying a beautiful sun set, before returning back on board.
