Isabela and Fernandina Islands
We have reached “volcano avenue,” the island of Isabela. I knew it was going to be a special day since the very moment I felt the first sun rays through my cabin porthole; this is the west, and therefore the unusual can be expected. Right before the crossing of the equator line, a Bryde’s whale surprised us. The whale surfaced a couple of times right off the bow. Then we had some strange visitors aboard the Polaris: a party of pirates under the command of King Neptune. They showed up in the bow of the ship, but these pirates did not take over, they were friendly ones and just wanted to make sure all our guests will be certified for the crossing of the Equator line.
During the panga ride in Pta. Vicente Roca, we saw turtles here and there, penguins on the rocks and also in the water, cormorants, and the highlight for all fish lovers was the Ocean sun fish, one of the giants of the oceans.
Later on found us on Fernandina Island which is the jewel of the crown of the whole archipelago. It’s a privilege to set foot ashore since this is an untouched place, plus it is the youngest, which gives us an idea how all these islands were in the beginning: just high volcanoes devoid of life, a truly harsh environment for all the biota that exist right now. We came back after a peaceful and beautiful visit.
