Genovesa Island

Kayaking, swimming and snorkeling are activites typically associated with the beach. However, when we heard that all these activities are going to be done in the middle of an extinct volcano, it was so hard to believe that it was real. But, we all had to admit that this caldera where we anchored today was an incredible place. It allowed us to do so many things. In fact, the hikes were all full of life and sounds. A great number of seabirds were in full courtship display, imprinting on our retinas and brains both excitement and romanticism. And all this was surrounded by rocks and the dramatic cliffs of the extinct caldera.

This is the time of the year when the frigate birds have their gular pouches completely inflated and the trees are still green which makes the island look like a green carpet for Christmas with sparkling red balloons as part of the decoration.

On the other hand, at night time, the sky was so clear that we decided to go for star gazing. Here we can see eighty percent of the constellations, the milky way so clear, and everyone got to see the equivalent of the little dipper, the famous southern crux, or as the Incas used to call it “chacana.”
