Floreana and Southern Isabela Islands
Floreana is still in the oldest part of the Galápagos Archipelago, therefore we saw an old stage of a shield volcano. This island has parasitic cones all over, such as cinder and tuff. In fact, this morning we had a great time snorkeling around Champion, which is an eroded tuff cone.
Our guests were amazed about the high diversity of marine life that this place offers. We encountered large schools of king angels, salemas, different species of parrot fish and creoles swimming against the prevailing water flows in order to feed on plank tonic organisms. But for many people the highlight of this outing was the playful sea lions. I think that among pinnepeds, sea lions are my favorite; juveniles are extremely playful and it seems they just wait for people to play with. Sometimes they put us to shame due to the amazing swimming and diving abilities they have. Along the cliffs of Champion, some sea birds were rusting as well, such as blue-footed boobies. It was a terrific morning!
The afternoon found us at southern Isabela, where the swells made our visit a pretty exiting one. But it was worth it, as we saw giant tortoises and flamingoes.
