Cerro Dragon and Sombrero Chino

What a great day we spent around these visitor sites. Each one of the multiple activities we planned for the day was a delight for our guests this week. We started the morning with a walk on Cerro Dragon, located in the northwestern part of Santa Cruz Island. The name of this location is quite significant for it is Spanish for dragon hill. In fact there are many land iguanas that roam in the area. This morning we observed many big land iguanas eating the low grasses. At this time of the year the vegetation around this place is luxuriously green. Beautiful weather accompanied us during the walk. Later in the morning we went for our first snorkeling outing of the day around Guy Fawkes Islets. Galapagos sea lions and their acrobatic movements were observed with enchantment.

In the afternoon after a very successful LEX Forum on Conservation of the Biodiversity, the Polaris went around Bainbridge Islets. We observed from our ship a very large group of Greater flamingos that live in a saline lagoon just in the crater of one of these islets. The islet is so flat that we could observe this unusual sighting. After this, we got ready for our second snorkeling outing of the day. We headed to the surroundings of Sombrero Chino. This volcanic cone has a peculiar shape that resembles a Chinese Hat. Snorkeling was superb, as we observed many different species of fish, sharks, rays, eels and Galapagos penguins! Other guests decided to explore the area kayaking or taking Zodiac rides. Finally we all came back onboard with many new memories and impressions from the interesting places we visited. Isolation and adventure, what a great way to spend holidays!
