Floreana Island

The island changed in shape as we approached it in the morning, the ocean was very calm, almost glassy because the wind had stopped blowing. In the distance we spotted a flock of blue-footed boobies that had started their journey to the open ocean to find fish.

This was the panorama early in the morning when we saw Floreana Island, "the island of a hundred volcanoes" - as Darwin called it when he saw it for the first time.

The enchantment of Floreana is different than the one of other islands, you can feel that it invites you to discover its beauty; we even call it the mystery island.

We saw the beauty of this island early in the morning when we visited a historical place, Post office barrel. But the splendor did not end there. After breakfast we moved to one of the most interesting places to snorkel, Champion Islet; located a mile away from the main island known for a superb number of fish in the waters around it.

The visibility was about sixty feet deep, so you could easily see the diversity of fish moving at different depths. Our guests played delightedly with a dozen of Galápagos sea lion babies that came to encounter us when we were in the water; it was a fantastic marine interaction between two mammal’s species.

I heard that somebody exclaimed “shark”; but here in Galápagos when we hear this word we don’t move away from them, we go to them. So we saw a white tip reef shark that was passing under the snorkelers, a big group of our guests saw not only one but several sharks. We all came back to our Zodiacs very excited from all the different creatures we had seen in this magic marine spot.

In the afternoon we did an easy and pleasant walk, watching Galápagos' flamingoes and we ended up at sunset time in a green sandy beach covered with olivine crystals. It was a magical end for a magical day.
