Santa Cruz Island
Not every Wednesday is the same. Today for instance it’s the Equinox, so our Shadow is free at noon. Vertical light for us on the Equator, clear skies on Santa Cruz Island.
The visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station had all sorts of events but the one that caught everyone’s attention was the sight of Lonesome George mounting his female companions. It’s got to be the heat some said; it’s the new moon, for others. Many Flycatchers and many breeding finches were observed. Hot weather makes people walk faster so everyone got to the meeting place rather early to take the coach to the Highlands where a swimming pool and lunch awaited us. Four brave bikers did it the hard way and were rewarded with a refreshing dip and grand food.
The afternoon offered good views of the sink-holes as well as the west side of Santa Cruz with Duncan Island and Nameless Rock floating in the Ocean. Fewer and less randy tortoises around the remaining waterholes were encountered at Rancho Primicias. It hasn’t rained for a month already so down here we don’t exactly understand why people elsewhere are talking about El Nino, farmers call it a normal year.
