Isabela & Fernandina Islands
We woke up around 6:30 this morning with an invitation from the bridge to come look out for whales and other cetaceans. After a watchful look-out, we spied two beaked whales. Later, while finishing a wonderful breakfast, we were with a pod of common dolphins off the starboard side. What a fantastic start to another beautiful day in these most exquisite islands.
The ocean was perfect, calm and blue; a soft breeze came up giving us nice fresh weather, perfect conditions to stay outside looking for some wildlife.
The early part of our day was spent cruising along the coast of Isabela. We took the pangas to get a closer look of plenty animals on the edge of the cliffs. We saw fur seals, penguins, and turtles. Heading off further away from the coast we saw the elusive Mola mola, also known as the ocean sun fish!
After our lunch and a lecture by our EL on Charles Darwin, we sailed to Fernandina, where we walked over lava rocks in search of flightless cormorants. We were greeted by massive groups of marine iguanas basking for the sun….some swimming back from lunch alga is in the menu.
As a perfect finish to our day on Fernandina, we spotted four Galápagos Penguins just as the sun was setting.
Another great day in the Enchanted Islands.
