Española Island
Today we started our exploration by visiting one of the most striking islands in the Galápagos archipelago: Española Island. This is a very small, flat island but there is a great variety of wildlife. We started our activities today with a very interesting walk on Punta Suarez. Our guests were amazed by the abundance of animals. At the very beginning there were many Galápagos sea lions, some of them were swimming, some others sleeping on the beach; they were the favorites for many of us. We also observed many marine iguanas; these interesting creatures are endemic to this island and their colorations are the most vibrant black and red imaginable. During our walk inland we observed a variety of animals: blue-footed boobies, Nazca Boobies, Galápagos hawks, Española mockingbirds, and Darwin finches; but we really spent a lot of time observing the waved albatrosses. These impressive birds are on the island during this time of the year and today we saw many on land. Some of these albatrosses were already courting and that was fascinating to observe. Our visitors were very impressed with the way we saw the animals today - it was really hard to believe that a place like the Galápagos Islands exists, where you can observe the animals very closely and they are not afraid of humans. This is an experience our visitors will never forget.
Back on board we enjoyed the Ecuadorian lunch and after a little siesta we proceeded with our next activities. This afternoon we visited a wonderful place - Gardner Bay. The landscape is stunning, white coralline sand, beautiful aquamarine waters and the best of all, many sea lions. Our activities included glass bottom boat, deep water snorkeling, kayaking and a walk along the beach. Our guests enjoyed very much all the different options and came back on board very happy.
What an extraordinary day!
