Española Island

We are at the very beginning of our expedition in the Galápagos, and it is hard to believe that we are already seeing so much. Our morning started with the exploration of an area known as Punta Suarez which features incredible landscapes with dramatic cliffs adorned with hundreds if not thousands of sea birds in full courting season.

Our walk was very pleasant and it included the visit to the most famous sea birds in the Galápagos, the waved albatross. We were very successful in our task, as we found quite a few dozen of them fully entertained performing their elaborated courtship dance.

As we continued with our walk, the landscape opened up to reveal the impressive shoreline and the intense dark colored waters bathing the shores. Everywhere we looked water was surrounding us, so it made only sense to start our water activities today during our afternoon at Gardner Island. This is a small satellite island not too far away from Espanola. The snorkeling was simply great, and it gave us the chance to appreciate how pristine the marine ecosystem of the Galápagos still is.

We were able to combine several activities with the snorkeling: kayaking, beach time and the first (of many) outings of the glass bottom boat was also on today’s menu.

By the end of the day many happy faces came back to the ship, willing to share the exciting adventures of our first full day. We can only say that today was just the beginning of many days ahead, full of unforgettable memories!
