Floreana Island
Our great journey began in the early hours of the day, visiting Post Office Bay. After looking through the many letters and postcards, some of our guests found a few going to the same places they live. With the promise of hand delivering these letters we left this enigmatic place. Post Office Bay has been one of the places where several attempts were made to colonize Floreana with little or no success. Nowadays, there is a small population where many of its inhabitants work in farms, fisheries, and tourism. This island also has turned out to be one of the places where the eradication of goats is becoming a success. In the future vegetation will recuperate, letting some of the endemic animal populations to flourish again.
Later in the morning we got into our Zodiacs and headed towards Champion Islet, where some of our guests boarded our glass bottom boat, and others snorkeled along the dramatic cliffs, where spectacular large schools of fish and sea lions provided them with the best time.
One of the most important aspects of Champion is that this is the home of a small population of the unique Floreana mockingbird. We also encountered several swallow tailed gulls, brown noddy terns, blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, red billed tropic birds and Galápagos shearwaters.
During the afternoon there were several options; some went kayaking, while others swam off the beach on Punta Cormorant. We also walked to see Greater flamingos and sea turtles nests. We had an absolutely amazing afternoon on the flour beach; where the sand is pure white and soft and the color of the water has the most beautiful turquoise blue shade.
