Floreana Island
Our expedition brought us today to this little jewel in the Pacific. Floreana island is fascinating both for its breathtaking wildlife and for its rich human history. Early in the morning we headed out for our first outing of the day, we went to visit to Post Office Bay. This place constitutes the oldest postal system still in use in the Pacific Ocean. For more than two centuries the wooden barrel located in this place has been the depositary of thousands of messages and hopes. Following the tradition we dropped-off and pick up postcards. There is only one amusing condition; the postcards have to be delivered hand to hand without using stamps.
During breakfast we navigated with the Polaris to Champion Islet. Snorkeling in this islet is extraordinary. The always admired Galápagos sea lions were the stars of the day. The playfulness and grace of these marine mammals make them one of our visitors’ favourite animal species. With swift and skilful acrobatic underwater movements Galápagos sea lions won very quickly not only the admiration but also the affection of their observers. They have a charm that is hard to explain but is very contagious. Some sea lions zipped past like torpedoes leaving behind bubbles in our surprised faces. Others were just playing in small groups nibbling one another their heads and flippers.
The afternoon was dedicated to walk around Punta Cormorant. The main attraction were the Greater flamingos. These colourful birds were observed at their best today. Some were very close while others were seen flying around a brackish lagoon where they carry their lives on. The day was finally over, but such strong memories and feelings had been provoked that it will be in our hearts and minds forever.
