Isabela & Fernandina Islands

Today these enchanted islands were at their best! Their intrinsic beauty makes them a genuine nature lovers’ paradise. Breathtaking volcanic landscapes constitute a marvelous frame where their inhabitants carry on their lives. Isabela and Fernandina Islands represent an exquisite combination of wilderness and intrinsic natural splendor that enhance the halo of magic that floats everywhere.

We started our expedition early this morning circumnavigating Roca Redonda. In this place we observed many marine bird species. Later in the morning we took a Zodiac ride along the coastline of Isabela Island in a place known as Punta Vicente Roca. Wildlife is abundant around this area. Galápagos penguins, flightless cormorants and the bizarre and interesting giant sunfish (Mola mola) were among the favorite sightings. Snorkeling was great for we had the thrill of swimming with many Pacific green sea turtles and with Galápagos penguins. The latter experience is in a nutshell just amazing. Sea turtles floating and swimming peacefully together with swift penguins fishing is a combination hard to beat.

In the afternoon after a wonderful lunch and a talk about the great Charles Darwin, we went for a walk on Fernandina Island. Black lava flows, distributed in a random artistic way and covered with hundreds of marine iguanas. This area is a true paradisiacal visitors’ site where you can feel you have gone back in time; immersed in an idyllical Garden of Eden. Light conditions were spectacular for photography today. A soft warm light tremendously enhanced our experience. The sense of wonder and discovery encircled us today. We can hardly wait to see what tomorrow will bring to our expedition around this magical archipelago!
