Dragon Hill, Santa Cruz Island
I woke up in high spirits, after all, I am in the Galápagos Islands and I could almost assure that nothing could go wrong in this part of the world. By the end of the day, I laugh at the thought of becoming some sort of gypsy, one of those who carry a crystal ball and predicts the future (or at least say they do) because I just did it…nothing went wrong, it was a perfect, literally flawless day!
It has been a while since I last was visiting Dragon Hill, and I can certainly say that it looks better than ever! The wonderful news of the successful programs developed in this particular island (Santa Cruz) give me hopes to an even brighter future for the Galápagos.
The land iguana program proved to be successful enough when we encountered today well over a dozen of land iguanas, the majority of them within a few feet from the trail.
Their healthiness and fearless behaviour assures me that it has been a while since they last had an encounter with possible introduce predators.
The cool-overcast early morning was perfect for our walk, and as if it was all planned (I’d like to think it was…) the sun broke through the clouds to shine brighter than ever right on time for our snorkelling outing!
This glorious weather remained like that for the rest of the day, so more snorkelling could be experienced during the afternoon, too. A cool ocean breeze accompanied all of those who decided to take the Zodiac cruises and the kayak option, as we explored the irregular and overdramatic lava flows of Sombrero Chino, off the coast of Santa Cruz Island.
Tonight we’ll leave behind the island of Santa Cruz, ready to explore new territories in the Galápagos and I would like to give you more details on what it is going to happen, but let me check first my trustworthy crystal ball…
