Fernandina Island

Today's visit was an extravagant display of untarnished beauty, of wildness, and of astonishment, for late this afternoon we saw a whale shark from our Zodiacs.

Since my first dive when I saw a whale shark at the age of twelve years old, I have been diving many times, but I have never had such an encounter with this beautiful creature. This afternoon, at the end of our visit as we were making our way back to the Polaris, it was incredible to hear how happy our guests were after seeing common dolphins, bottle-nosed dolphins, ocean sunfish, penguins, flightless cormorants, marine iguanas, Bryde's whales, pacific manta rays, sea turtles, and American oystercatchers sitting on eggs. Suddenly, as the sun was disappearing on the horizon, we spotted some whale spouts and the most unbelievable feeding-frenzy that I have ever seen in my life started to take place in front of our eyes. Pelicans, boobies, storm petrels, frigate birds, sharks and Bryde's whales were all over around our Zodiacs. The most unforgettable experience of my life then began when a whale shark started to push our Zodiacs, giving us the opportunity to touch it, and certainly the adrenaline started to flow when we saw it swim under our Zodiac, and a few seconds later we felt the Zodiac rise a few inches off the water.

If there is something that I can say to every one who is reading this, is that it is impossible to find words to describe my feelings, and I just want to say come and enjoy the miracle of these island's treasures.
