Isabela and Fernandina Islands

The “Land of the Volcanoes”: this is yet another way the Galápagos Islands are known. This remote archipelago has different names, different landscapes, different animals and inspires different feelings in everyone.

It is hard to believe that just a few hours of traveling will take us to such dramatic changes of landscape. Volcanoes, surrounding us everywhere we look, make us feel overwhelmed by their majesty. The black lava flows are the only witness of the events that once upon a time occurred on this side of the world. It is hard to imagine such events, but the result is imminent and the volcanoes are here. The land of fire is still pretty active, just like Hawaii, its closest relatives in beauty, strength and power.

The morning went by just as every other wonderful day here: full of events and sightings! The Zodiac ride along Punta Vicente Roca, Isabela Island, was spectacular. Lots of sea turtles floating in a nice calm bay were the highlight of the morning, but of course we wanted more, so we decided to jump in the water and snorkel with them! It was great to see them under water as well as above and the morning was complete when some penguins and flightless cormorants came within sight as well.

Later in the afternoon, the ship navigated through calm water to take us to Punta Espinoza, Fernandina Island. I could not be more in love with this island, if I could only marry it, I would! It was simply stunning! Fernandina Volcano was just a bit covered with clouds and I was under the impression that it had a wedding veil. Tons of marine iguanas, sea lions and of course shore birds mottling the landscape as if out of a dream of which we don’t want to wake up, this was simply a superb visit!
