Isabela and Fernandina Islands

The intrinsic beauty of this remote archipelago bewitched us completely today. Early in the morning we officially crossed the equatorial line onboard the Polaris. In addition to the joy this event produced in our visitors, something spectacular was happening today.

Wonderful beams of light were illuminating Ecuador Volcano. This highly eroded volcano is bisected by the equatorial line; the Spanish word for the geographical equator is Ecuador, a name shared by this volcano and my country. The whole view was, by general consensus, a magical moment. The beams of light were seen against a dark grayish sky. The contrast between the marked differences in brightness produced a real- life postcard in front of our bewildered eyes. I was sincerely, and I still am, inspired and touched by this wonderful moment. High and dense clouds acted like curtains that let warm and strong sunrays pass in a delicate way. During the rest of the morning, I heard various expressions of admiration. One of them, I chose at random, is this one: “It’s just glorious.” This statement reflects in a nutshell what we observed. The rest of the day was filled with amazing animal encounters and exciting landscapes, but the splendid beginning we had today was very hard to beat. Enjoy it!
