Isabela & Fernandina Island

Today we are visiting the western realm of the Galápagos Islands, Isabela and Fernandina. I could not think of any other place better than this to finish such a fun trip. The impressive shield shape volcanoes at the distance gave us the idea to be in a remote place taken directly from the past. It was impossible not to think on how things could have been during the time when dinosaurs were governing this world. Even though dinosaurs were never present in the Galápagos, we were able to imagine as if they were, since marine iguanas, good representatives of the reptile’s fauna in Galápagos, displayed their amazing pre-historic features everywhere.

The morning Zodiac ride along Punta Vicente Roca, at Isabela Island was superb! Lots and lots of marine turtles were encountered along the way and the always welcome “Mola mola” (oceanic sunfish) was a highlight for everyone.

The afternoon walk, strolling on lava flows and sandy beaches showed us the best of Fernandina. The incredible flightless cormorants with their nests and chicks were found at the northern tip of the island, giving us the perfect visual explanation of what evolution means, and of course, more marine iguanas were found in the way, blending in so well that we though as if they were rocks becoming alive as we strolled.

To be in a place like Galápagos is a privilege, there is no doubt about it. Even more the privilege is to be among the animals that with fearlessness stroll among their path. With the ending of the trip very close, it is hard to believe that soon this will be “yesterday’s trip,” but with the amazing things we have seen and learn in this remote place in the planet, there is no doubt that this could well be, a trip of a life time…
