Española Island

Galápagos is a micro world where you can find unique creatures in clear evolution. Today we explored the coast of Española Island where some animals choose to live; not only the famous Darwin’s finches and Albatrosses, but also sea lions and a good quantity of marine iguanas. Marine iguana breeding season is over, but some of the males seem like they keep trying to find females, maybe because the weather hasn’t changed much in the last months. We had a group of kids that enjoyed contemplating these unique creatures, but also learning about how these animals changed and involved from a common ancestor into unique individuals.

In the scavenger hunt list today we had to find a creature that throws salt, and so we were watching marine iguanas for a while until they suddenly sneezed salt out of their nostrils, it was fun! Right in the middle of our snorkeling briefing the captain took us pretty close to a humpback whale with its calf. They spent a good hour next to the ship, blowing air and playing around. Everyone was captivated by the little calf that always stayed very close to its big mother.

The afternoon was wonderful too. We encountered a moray eel eating. It came right beside the underwater camera, opened its jaws and showed me its long row of sharp teeth. Española Island always offers new and exciting sightings!
