Hood Island

One of the most beautiful animals we have in the Galápagos are the sea lions, which probably evolved from the California sea lions. But in the Galápagos they never were hunted or even disturbed by people, so these animals are very friendly, playful, good humored, and sometimes a little inquisitive. They spend many hours sleeping at the beaches; therefore many times we think they are lazy animals. We forget that they have been fishing, and swimming for a long time, so when they are at the beach they are trying to rest and recover their energy back.

The conditions in Galápagos for these mammals are good, so we can see pregnant females and babies all year round. July, August and September are the cold months, strong currents come from Peru, and Chile, bringing a lot of nutrients and there are many more fish getting close to the coast. This is probably the best season to give birth. The mothers don’t need to go so far away looking for food with the abundance of fish, and therefore they don’t leave their pups for too long, because on land or in the water they are very vulnerable. Here in this picture we have a female and a pup who is a couple of hours born.
