Genovesa Island
This is a swallow-tailed gull, a bird that never rests, or at least, that’s what it seems to me. They fish at night. With their huge eyes they can see squid come up to the surface of the ocean in the dark. Then they fly back to Genovesa Island, but not to rest. Here they feed their chicks, or walk around, or preen their mates and themselves. Few times I have seen a swallow-tailed gull resting, but it must be that I get to share just a little portion of their total time on land. Genovesa is also the island where we see red-footed boobies and hundreds of great frigate birds. We were able to see a few more sea lions and quite a few fur seals as well. The scenery is spectacular; we anchored inside a volcano, and had impressive lava walls all around the ship at sunrise and at sunset. The water is always warmer, as this is the northeastern most island, so the snorkeling was great, and we enjoyed the colors of parrotfish and Moorish idols. At night, when we left the island, the swallow-tailed gulls were leaving too, to work, to fish at night.
