Española
It is our first morning in the Galápagos Islands, we can hardly believe it! After a good night’s rest, we are all ready to start our adventure, and what better a place to start it than the island of Española. As all the groups finally arrive on the island, a few welcoming parties are lined up on the ground: marine iguanas, lava lizards and baby sea lions! What a nice experience. Most of us decide to go on the long walk while one group decides to do the short walk and a short Zodiac ride around the coast of the island, both very exciting. It is hard to pick a highlight on this island, since everything is so marvelous. We encounter myriads of Nazca boobies, blue-footed boobies, a few Galápagos hawks and at the very end, the majestic and ever famous waved albatrosses! Some saw them dancing, some jumping off cliffs and some observed them while they were mastering the sky! It is a truly memorable morning.
We returned to the ship to attend our snorkeling briefing, since in the afternoon we had our first snorkeling outing at Gardner Bay. After a delicious lunch, we can hardly wait to go out and finally get in the water and discover a world as yet unknown to most of us. Two groups take off to Turtle Rock for the deep water snorkeling while others go on the glass bottom boat and yet others decide to hang out at the beach. The water was cold but it was worthwhile going in. We could all observe schools of fish, tiger snake eels and even marine turtles! Once we have all enjoyed this, it is time again to visit our already good friends, the sea lions! At first sight we can hardly believe it, from far we see a beautiful white sandy beach filled with enormous rocks, as we get close those rocks start moving, they are all sea lions waiting for us! We have an excellent afternoon just strolling around the beach and enjoying a piece of paradise. A perfect closure for a perfect day.
