Floreana Island

It was a fresh, windy morning in a remote place of the archipelago: Floreana Island. This is known as the mystery island due to several people that went missing when they tried to colonize it. Of course, this is an island where we too wanted to have an adventure, so most of us decided to take a 6:30 am outing to the very famous Post Office Bay. This is a place where whalers probably erected the first postal system in the Galápagos, and today many of us mailed our post cards from here. After our visit to the post barrel, we took our Zodiacs and explored a nearby sea lion colony. We got to see the ever so playful pups, females and also adult males that reminded us to keep our distance. As we were cruising through enjoying these magnificent animals, a few sea turtles started catching our attention and then pelicans, frigates and boobies stole our attention away as well!! After this fascinating Zodiac ride, it was time for breakfast followed by our snorkeling outing to Champion Islet. This snorkeling is one of the most successful ones: sea lions, plenty of fish and even marine turtles can be observed.

After snorkeling and Zodiac riding, we came aboard for the biggest lunch yet, our Ecuadorian buffet! We were all delighted and so heavily fed that we barely had time to digest it all before our next outing to Punta Cormorant. This is the place where we find the green olivine beach and is an important nesting sight for sea turtles. As we started our walk along the path, we started seeing pink dots all over, which we discovered to be greater flamingos! We were so lucky to see so many, adults and juveniles as well. Most of them were very close to the trail and it seemed as if they posed for us, certainly a marvelous sighting. After this enchanting walk, once again we took the Zodiacs and returned home to the Polaris to enjoy a beautiful sunset and find out about our next adventure.
