Floreana Island
We found ourselves today surrounded by volcanic tuff all over the horizon. The island of Floreana is a middle age Island that hasn’t had any volcanic activity for a while; however, it is a rich place in term of human history. Before we even had breakfast, we went on an optional outing that took us to one of the most historical places in this region, the famous post office bay. Here, a simple barrel was placed back in the late seventeen hundreds to facilitate the delivery of mail to England and United States. Letters left in the barrel would be picked up by homebound ships and eventually delivery to their destination. This had become one of the most famous traditions in the Galápagos, not so much to deliver actual mail, but rather postcards from tourist that are lucky enough to get to see this enchanted place.
Later in the morning and after our well deserved breakfast, we headed to snorkel around the island of Champion. Lots of colorful fish and the playful sea lions were definitely the highlight of the outing. This incredible marine mammal was performing at its best whenever we encountered him. We had such a great time when one of the sea lions decided to check us up while we were observing the fish from the glass bottom boat.
The afternoon was also very pleasant. A wet landing on a green beach marked the beginning of our afternoon’s excursion. The trail that was located not too far from the beach lead us to a brackish lagoon with pink flamingos in it. As we continued to walk, we ended up in one of the largest marine turtle nesting grounds that are found in the Galápagos. The sunset was pretty nice and the distant blow of a whale closed another successful day in this well called paradise…
