Santa Cruz Island

A new day begins. We are anchored in Academy Bay and can feel the sun coming in through the Polaris windows. I know it is going to be warm, but that doesn’t matter, as it’s going to be a great day, a day of tortoises.

After breakfast, we board the Zodiacs towards the Charles Darwin Research Station, where our goal is to meet the famous tortoises before they go for a long siesta underneath the bushes. We see tortoise George, find tortoise Diego, and we enjoy the view of the many baby tortoises that someday will be repatriated to their islands.

A few people decide to bike to the place where we are having lunch. This is the home of Tim and Anita, a lovely site located in the green highlands of Santa Cruz. Some prefer to cool off in the swimming pool, and some walk in the gardens looking for finches and exotic fruits. In the afternoon, we encounter at least twenty tortoises, and the most colorful bird of all, the vermillion flycatcher.

It’s been a wonderful day, but the activities aren’t over with sunset. It’s just the beginning then of a party with Ecuadorian musicians, beautiful dancers, and our guests joining in the rhythm of galapagenian music.
