Genovesa Island
Few people have the opportunity to walk inside a volcano in their lives, let alone kayak along the rim of a collapsed caldera, discover dozens of red-billed tropic birds in flight, along with several nests of red-footed boobies and frigates, or have the chance to snorkel with Moorish idols and rays. And yet this all happened the same day, and at the same site, it was our Thursday on Genovesa Island. One of the highlights was to encounter a frigate bird trying to steal food from this baby Nazca booby, proving they are cleptoparasitic birds; they make their living mostly by stealing from others. With colossal wing span but at the same time very light, they have great maneuverability in flight.
We spotted a short-eared owl in the afternoon, kayakers played with a manta ray and hikers went up Prince Phillip steps in search of adventure. We loved Genovesa! Warmer water, more than a million birds and the smallest marine iguana in the archipelago are found on this island. We’ll certainly keep this place in our hearts!
