Bartolomé and Santiago Islands
Again we are sailing the central archipelago, and today we visited these wonderful islands that always give us so many gratifications.
It was somewhat disappointing that we had overcast skies early in the morning while climbing to the highest point of Bartolomé, however, once we reached the summit, some light came over and the photography was excellent. Once we finished this part of the trail, we went to visit the beautiful orange beach where to our surprise, we found a jealous sea lion guarding his territory. At some point the bull was displeased with our presence, but then he realized his complaints were ineffective and allowed us to go swimming and snorkelling. Not of course without having a “talk” with him first.
In the water we had the company of several blue-footed boobies diving just next to us. We were able to see the whole trajectory that they followed from the sky to underwater and back to fly. It was exciting but concerning at the same time; who knows how good their flying computer is. To my knowledge, there are no records of boobies making such a mistake like to dive “through” a snorkeller.
In the afternoon, we had a big surprise when at the landing moment we faced the northern swell, which makes the landing sort of difficult, with big waves. After some emotive seconds, everybody was safe on land.
One of the liveliest moments in the existence of a naturalist is when we are able to see and describe the emotions reflected on everybody’s face. During this visit, things were smooth and our guests were commenting and recognizing every tip of information they were given during this week.
