Floreana Island

This is the second day of our trip, and it seems to get better and better everyday (at least that is what our guests are continuously commenting). After a wonderful sunrise, our day started with an early Zodiac ride around a group of small rocky islands located at the northern side of Floreana. Here, we observed green sea turtles mating just a few feet away from the Zodiac (well, they were farther than that, but we got closer). Babies of the Galápagos sea lions were playing in the nearby small tidal pools, being guarded by the beach master that never took its eyes from us.

Right after that, we disembarked at Post Office bay. The intention for this visit was to continue the old tradition started back in the late seventeen hundreds. We collected and dropped postcards that, without the need of a stamp, would make their destination by means of hand delivering!

We came back for breakfast and sailed off to our next destination, Champion Islet. The snorkeling was wonderful, and some of the guest experienced the feeling of swimming with sharks, sea turtles, sea lions and a large mosaic of colorful fish.

The lunch was also part of the big day activities, since it was an Ecuadorian food festival prepared and served by our Galley team. They had been storming in the kitchen the whole morning preparing the delicious and quite different recipes that were presented to our guests.

The afternoon was great for bird watching. We had a great display of flamingoes sieving their food from the mud found at the bottom of a brackish water lagoon. As a big surprise, a young flamingo was also found very close to the shore. Totally oblivious of our presence, the young “colorless” flamingo continued with its feeding, regardless of the amounts of “wows” from our guests and clicks from their cameras.

It was time to return to our home, the good ship Polaris, but not without the enchanting colors of a beautiful sunset in the horizon…
