Genovesa Island
One of the most interesting islands in the whole Galápagos archipelago is the Island of Genovesa. This tiny island is also known, despite its very flat geography, by the name of Tower. It is inhabited mainly by birds, making a total population that goes way over a million of them.
We landed in the morning on a beautiful little white beach, perhaps knowing already that we might have to pay tribute for today’s experience, as we were under literally dozens of different species of birds, which were flying above our heads.
It was great to recognize different species of animals; mammals, reptiles, and of course birds, living in such peace and harmony in a tiny territory.
Well, I have to confess that there were times that we were not so sure about the harmony part, since the frigate birds that were flying overheads, were extremely eager to harass, peck and even hurt some of the other species of sea birds for their own benefit. This is behavior is called “klepto parasitism” which literarily explains the whole thing.
One of the birds that are more affected due this behavior is the red footed boobies. They are found nowadays massively nesting on the bushes everywhere in the island. Most of them are already with tiny little babies that of course need lots of food, so we find the adults boobies making extra trips to the ocean to compensate the requirements of food of the babies.
By the end of the day, we had succeeded in our daily goal, saw all the species and provide with a clear satisfaction in our guests’ faces when talking about this enchanted little place called Genovesa.
