Hood Island

We spent our first full day exploring the southeastern most point of the enchanted islands. This place, Espanola, is always rich in wild life, and as soon as we approached the shore line, we encountered sea lions, sun bathing marine iguanas, curious mockingbirds and all right by the trail. Several red-billed tropic birds flew over and around us, making their typical calls, and illuminating the morning with their bright beaks and sounds.

The colors of the rocks, the sky and the ocean transmitted peace and beauty. Even the blow hole looked more powerful than ever. Maybe I saw the island today with fresher eyes, as I hadn’t been around for a month. After all, this is home for me, and walking the Galápagos trails I get fulfilled with happiness and warm feelings.

In the afternoon, I submerged in the magnificent turquoise waters of Gardner bay. I had the opportunity of giving snorkeling tips to many guests who, for the first time, experienced this activity. Many learned and took off for the rocks, where there were white-tip reef sharks and colorful fish. Deep water snorkelers also had encounters with the underwater reign, same for glass bottom boaters. At the end of the day, with amazing light and a cool breeze, several of our guests kayaked along enchanted bays of Espanola and headed back to the ship in the company of boobies and shearwaters in flight.
