Santa Cruz Island

It’s a sunny morning, and from the ship itself, we can feel the warm and friendly atmosphere of Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Island. There are many little boats anchored in the bay, and we catch a glimpse of the activity of this busy town, the largest inhabited in the Galápagos. We also know this is the island where we’ll see tortoises in the wild and new kinds of land bird species. Indeed, we land at the National Park dock to pretty soon encounter famous lonesome George, dozen baby tortoises of different islands and successfully breeding Espanola tortoises. Lunch is in the highlands, in a picturesque place with colorful flowers and fruits all around. The afternoon finds us in a place which happens to be in the migratory route of giant tortoises. We found dozens of them in the wild, as well as several tree finches and yellow warblers. However, the highlight of many of our guests was to find a vermillion flycatcher landing on the back of a huge tortoise. Even more touching was to witness the patience and interest of our youngest guest on board, Jackson Sewell, who carefully approached the animals and with care and love photographed them. We are sure that Galápagos will live in Jackson’s and all of our guests’ hearts forever.
