Floreana Island
The water in Galapagos is just at the right temperature. It is wonderful to submerge in these 78-79°F waters which are so crowded with life. Tropical fish swim all around us, sea lions play with us, and the colors and beauty of the underwater world impress us on this warm morning of water activities.
By early today, even before breakfast, we had seen our share of sea lions. From the Zodiacs we observed the babies just waking up in the area of Floreana called “La Loberia,” or the sea lion nursery. Some of us were privileged to see the albino sea lion pup (see photo). She is almost 19 months old now and still appears fat and healthy. We left post cards at the Post Office barrel and it will be curious to see when and with whom these notes reach their destinations.
After breakfast we cruised to Champion, and that is where the real party began. Some of our guests decided to enjoy the wonders of the ocean from the glass bottom boat. Many of us (6 Zodiacs full!) chose to dip into this water world. And we had so much fun!
There is no creature more playful and curious than the Galapagos sea lions, other than us human beings, of course. It is a thrill to observe the interaction between these two species, especially when you are part of the show! Filming this episode in the lives of humans and sea lions is also always entertaining.
