Chatham Strait, Hood Bay and Lake Eva
Morning broke on seas of glass, reflecting trees of green
Through the mist the Sea Bird came until the whales were seen.
Two humpbacks breathed and arched and dove, their flukes and backs held high
Then just as breakfast did begin, one soared into the sky!
Our minds elated and stomachs full, we pulled into Hood Bay
To find a mighty Alaskan bear would certainly make our day!
The birds were flying, and Bryan knew each name as they went by,
But even scoters could not distract the brown-bear hunting eye!
At last we came upon a Brown as it feasted on the beach
Rolling boulders like a toy and reaching underneath
As cameras clicked and smiles were born we wondered at the truth
How can the bears enjoy the taste of slurping barnacle soup?
The morning changed to afternoon, at last we went to shore
In Hanus Bay of Eva Lake for kayaking and more.
We walked through moss and berry bush, we knew the bears were close
The proof lay towering at our feet in piles of bear poop... gross!
The salmon jumped from sea to stream, we marveled at the sight,
We know that they were jumping still as we sailed into the night,
But before the sun could leave the sky we stopped in Kasnyku falls
And watched the water turn to mist...ahhh, the beauty of it all.
