Point Adolphus, Elfin Cove, George Island & Idaho Inlet
It was really far too early when the speaker made a squawk
“There be humpback whales a lounging off the bow at 12 o’clock!”
Tom’s voice was soft yet all the ship was soon upon the deck
And a couple humpbacks breached as if to say ‘well, what the heck!”
By 7:10 all the whales had gathered in a row
A dozen dorsal fins afloat, a dozen wispy blows
They fluked and dove together and swam beneath the sea,
Chasing fish and other things unseen by you or me.
As our day progressed from rain to cloud and then to sunny blue,
We wandered around Elfin Cove to see what people do,
We frolicked at George Island, on sea as well as land,
Chasing down our history in armaments and sand.
At last upon the ship we came to smile and drink and eat,
Reliving our adventures and the things that we found neat,
The sky above turned pink and gold, the clouds framed mountains tall,
We drank our wine and passed our time in wonder of it all.
( and after all the colours faded into blues and grays,
an otter raft was spotted as we slipped into a bay,
they floated on their backs, their feet like paddles in the breeze
then after we had seen our fill they dove beneath the seas.)
