Tracy Arm and Williams Cove
As the pictures above reveal, we awoke this morning in front of the cobalt blue face of the Sawyer Glacier. By 7am everyone was on the deck ooh-ing and ahh-ing and hoping that an enormous piece of ice would come crashing into the sea. And we were not disappointed—before our incredulous eyes, a small piece of “the arch” began to fall, followed by the most enormous chunk imaginable, an apartment block sized piece of blue whose splash towered well over a 100 (dare I say 200?) feet in the air. The ship rocked and rolled for minutes as the shock waves echoed through the bay. Yeehah!
The rest of the day was similarly charged. The sky was blue and the sun was hot, the mountains and granite mounds of Tracy Arm were majestic, the black bear feeding on the shoreline both cute and powerful. We visited two waterfalls, we kayaked in Williams Cove and we hiked through boot sucking mud. A wine-and-cheese-and-chocolate-and-soda-and-smoked-salmon tasting smorgasbord awaited us back onboard the Sea Bird as a prelude to dinner. After dinner we were treated to a concert from the “Sea Bird Youth Choir” composed of the 11 youths on our trip with musical accompaniment from harmonica maestro Hal Moore and guitarists Kim Heacox and Chris Lindberg. The tune? An original composition the choir put together under the afternoon sun (see below). Way to go Reut, Eran, Keren, Shai, Rose, Caroline, Michael, Courtney, Jon, Tom, and Jim!
Barnacles for Brunch (to blues in G)
Chorus:
Gimme Humpbacks for Breakfast
Icebergs for Lunch
Black bears for Dinner
And Barnacles for Brunch
When cruising on the Sea Bird, you do a lot of things
Especially with kids aboard and the energy they bring
So open up your ears to what we kids are gonna say
‘Cause someday you’ll be old and you’ll be doing things our way!
<< Chorus >>
Hiking in the forest, stomping in the mud
Showering in the waterfall, making a big flood
Kayaking in the water we thought we saw an otter
But it was just a seal, so it wasn’t a big deal!
<< Chorus >>
Bridge: Humpback doing a breach – Black bear walking the beach
<< Harmonica Solo >>
<< Chorus >>
We found a bear track, we made a plaster cast
Then Chris dumbly stepped on it, so it didn’t last
In the morning there was fog, afternoon we met a bog
Orcas, birds and salmon, this ends our jammin!
