Pond Island
What did we think we would take away from our trip to Southeast Alaska? Did we come with a wish list of animal sightings? Humpback whales? Check. Killer whales? Check. Black bears, brown bears, calving glaciers, Steller’s sea lions, sea otters, check them off as well. What about the unexpected treasures – did hearing a whale breath leave you in awe? Did the stunning jagged skyline of the Fairweather Range as backdrop to Johns Hopkins Glacier leave you speechless? Did you know it was even possible to get sunburned in Alaska? Was it a surprise as well as a delight to hear the whoop, whoop, whoop of the feeding whales vocalizations via our hydrophone? What will be your most treasured memory? Will it be the surprise and delight of a whale breaching just in front of our ship? Or will it be the moment of quiet solitude, when all you could hear was the pitter-patter-plop of raindrops on the leaves of a pond lily as a fly buzzed by and a thrush sang in the woods?
Our experiences have been more than a list to be run through and marked off. This week has been an opportunity to share an experience in an incredibly beautiful place with those most precious and dear to us: our families; and those memories and experiences are priceless.
