Pavlov Harbor and Icy Strait
This just in from the Sports Desk at WLEX, Channel 01A:
“… tuning in, you’re in time to catch the final moments of today’s truly amazing match-up between the Chichagof Island Brown Bears and the Chatham Strait Humpback Whales. This summer, these two teams are neck-and-neck for first place in the Southeast Alaskan Mammal League. It’s hard to tell which species is the overall crowd-favorite, but from the roars on the bow, I’d say the whales are pulling ahead in this game. After soundly defeating the Rock Jock squad yesterday, the humpback’s momentum is carrying them to yet another win.
The brown bears started out strong in the early stages of the game: this morning a sow and her three cubs performed a ‘triple play’ on shore, followed by two other adult bears foraging a little further along. As the eager fans transferred from the Sea Bird to the front-row seating in the kayaks and Zodiacs, another sow and pair of cubs fed at the base of the waterfall in Pavlov Harbor.
Later in the morning, the humpbacks started to chip away at the bears’ lead. A single humpback cruised the area, allowing both kayakers and Zodiac cruisers great looks at its massive back and wide flukes. The humpback’s rally began in earnest in the late afternoon: the fans aboard the Sea Bird cheered and clapped as several different groups of whales exhibited tail-throws, pectoral slaps, and even breaching!
The brown bears certainly gave it their all, and many people thought the bears would be able to win this game with their home field advantage, but the visiting marine mammals look to be the victors tonight. That wraps up another game in the Southeast Alaska Mammal League, thanks for tuning in and good night to all our listeners out there …”
