Lake Eva & Chatham Strait

Wilderness surrounds us as we sail through the sheltered waters of Hanus Bay. The early risers are eager to share the pleasure of gathering on deck for a morning stretch class amidst such beauty and majesty.

Later on this morning we begin our hike on the Lake Eva trail. We listen to the sound of the rumbling stream as we walk beside the river. Romping through the forest sloshing through the mud, and feeling the rain gently washing over our faces provides a feast for all our senses. Along the trail, next to the fish viewing point, we find the largest brown bear print imaginable! It leaves us speechless and in awe of how huge a foot on a bear can actually be.

Our wonderful experience continues when we next explore the area by kayak. The narrow passageways through these tranquil waters evoke a soothing meditative state of being. The harbor seals enchant us with their ebony eyes peering above the water with compelling curiosity.

The afternoon back on ship is a reflective time for the guests. Some guests take time to journal or write poetry. Many others choose to enhance their experience by relaxing with the soothing, healing touch received from one of the therapeutic Wellness treatments.

The evening concludes with a scenic cruise through Chatham Strait and Frederick Sound. One of our young guests, Ani Graves age 11, from Astoria, Oregon shares her beautiful interpretation of this evenings cruise:

“Misty forests all around,
Beautiful waterfalls without a sound.

Rain gently and quietly falling,
A lone crow’s muffled calling.

Many cliffs covered with trees,
The boat slowly moving at ease.”
