Isla del Carmen Baja California Sur, Mexico

Earlier this morning, we visited the small island of Monserrat, also in the Gulf of California. Besides the interesting water sports, we saw a number of common dolphins and a medium-sized whale, possibly a Sei whale. Here we kayaked in the clear waters of the Gulf, and some of us snorkeled near the coastline. At midday we lifted anchor and changed our position to Isla del Carmen, where a great series of hikes was organized. Due to the two storms in the area since last September, a great variety of plants were seen flowering, and therefore the animals on the island were very active. Among these were the tarantulas, big hairy spiders. We watched a female in the last throes of life, as she had probably laid her last clutch of eggs, thus ending her life. Isla del Carmen is composed of different thick layers of volcaniclastic sediments, intruded by numerous dikes of igneous material. All these different rocks make this walk one of the loveliest of the islands in the Gulf of California.
