FANCY MEETING YOU HERE...

The elusive green flash beaconed the start of our day in the Sea of Cortez as the first rays of the sun rose above smooth waters. We enjoyed the company of a Bryde’s whale and traveled to anchorage in picturesque Half Moon Bay on Isla San Francisco. Here we hiked salt flats and desert fringe before visiting spectacular tidepools on the island’s east side. Our resident marine experts discovered beautiful nudibranchs, tentacled sea cucumbers, colorful sea stars and a variety of other invertebrate organisms.

During a delightful fajita lunch the Sea bird traveled to the small islet Los Islotes near the northern end of Isla Espiritu Santo. Besides hosting nesting blue-footed and brown boobies, Los Islotes is a rookery of the California sea lion, Zalophus californianus. Snorkelers from the Sea Bird were able to experience these playful pinnipeds firsthand as inquisitive youngsters swam up and investigated their new found “marine” mammal friends. As the sea lions cavorted around their less agile human swimming mates a good time was had by all.
