Bahia Magdalena, Boca de Soledad
Our first full day aboard the Sea Bird marked the beginning of the season with the grey whales of Magdalena Bay. We had the opportunity to be the first vessel to transit the narrows of the Hull Canal on our way to explore the Boca de Soledad -- the mouth of solitude. After Hurricane Juliet inundated the small fishing community of Puerto Lopez Mateos last September, many of us wondered how this northern entrance to Bahia Magdalena would be altered. We found calm, sunny, warm conditions and spent time wandering the dunes of Isla Magdalena on foot, and venturing far out toward the Pacific Ocean by Zodiac. We encountered a small pod of bottlenose dolphins that rode the bow of our Zodiacs and, at sunset, watched hundreds of seabirds streaming toward their evening perches in the mangroves.
